Abstract
Tradition and authority in theologyThe problem of authority in theology is as old as the Bible itself. Authority comes into question especially when a new trend in theology diverges from the approved. One can claim authority for a 'new' theology by reinterpretation of an authoritative tradition; by miracle stories; by association of one's theological point of view with an authoritative person from the past; and by an appeal to the oldest stratum in the authoritative text or tradition. This article concentrates mainly on the Biblical era.

Dit is naamlik die vraag hoe 'n nuwe teologiese boodskap, standpunt of rigting, aanspraak kan maak op gesag wanneer dit naas of selfs ook teenoor 'n gevestigde en gesagvolle tradisie te staan kom. (Met tradisie word bedoel oorgelewerde vertellings en teologoum ena wat soveel gesag het in 'n bepaalde kring van gelowiges dat dit die lewens en die geloof van daardie gelowiges rig.) Die tese is dat so 'n nuwe verkondiging of ISSN 0259-9422 = HTS 43/1 & 2 (1987)
Daar kan soms ook 'n beroep gedoen word op 'n ouer tradisie of 'n ouer laag in die gesagvolle tradisie om aan die eie teologiese standpunt meer gesag te gee

In die vierde plek kon daar gesag opgeëis word vir 'n nuwe verkondiging deur daarop aanspraak te maak dat die nuwe rigting met die oorspronklike bedoeling van die oudste en dus gesagvolste laag van die tradisie ooreenkom.
