Abstract
This study aims to explain how the tradition of using bridal makeup spells in Sambas Malay wedding tradition in Sekura Village in 1972-2018. This study uses historical research methods, with stages including heuristics, verification, interpretation, and historiography. The results of the study have shown that the use of bridal makeup spells in Sekura Village since the past until now is still used. The tradition of using bridal make-up spells is believed to have been around for a long time, because around 1972 there was a widespread use especially in Sekura Village, but over time the tradition of using bridal make-up spells in the 2000s changed. In this case, the change in question has not undergone many changes in the procession of its use, whether it is in the change in the role of mak inang as the servant of the bride (bridal makeup), tools and materials used for the used, bekasai, betangas, practice of using bridal make-up spells, and procedures how to use bridal makeup spells, which are part of the ornate tradition in the pre-wedding custom of the Sambas Malay community through periods of researchers doing. There are also several factors driving and inhibiting the tradition of using bridal makeup spells in the wedding tradition of the Sambas Malay community in Sekura Village, while the factors driving the tradition of their use are; a) The existence of makeup artists (mak inang); b) Easy inheritance of spells; c) Parental strength is strong against supernatural powers; d) The unavailability of a special spa or sauna pre-wedding treatment, as for the traditional factors inhibiting the use of bridal makeup spells namely; a) Lack of interest in the next generation to become makeup artists; b) The emergence of modern beauty cosmetology products and technology; c) The mindset of the people is getting more advanced.
