Abstract

Using cointegration analysis, this study examines the long-run impact of capital goods imports, exports of manufactured and primary goods on total factor productivity in Chile. The study finds productivity-enhancing effects of capital goods imports as well as manufactured exports, and productivity-limiting effects of primary exports. This finding indicates that aggregate trade measures, such as the ratio of imports plus exports to GDP, may mask important differences between different trade categories.
