Abstract
The paper contains a study of two models which represent the mechanisms of gage widening and rail roll in a track subjected to vertical, lateral, and longitudinal loading. The deformation mechanisms of the rail-fasteners-tie system under service loads was investigated, and the results compared with track test data. It was found that two distinct deformation mechanisms, rail translation and rail roll are mechanically coupled by the track system and can not be readily separated in any analysis.
