Abstract

Abstract Trace metals in a stretch of the Mapocho River downstream from a wastewater outfall near Santiago, Chile were studied. Elevated concentrations of Cr, Pb and Zn were detected in sediments downstream from the wastewater outfall. The metal enrichment occurred primarily in the upper 5 cm of the sediment column and within distances close to the point of waste discharge (<15 km downstream). Chemical fractionation of sediments showed that a majority of the metals in the sediments were associated with chemical forms not readily available biologically.
