Abstract

The recent advances in the coupling of HPLC with ICP-MS and its role in trace element speciation analysis of biological materials are discussed. Methodological approaches involving different chromatographic separation mechanisms (size exclusion, ion exchange and reversed phase) are presented for speciation of organometalloid species (arsenic and selenium) and of metal complexes with polypeptide and polysaccharide ligands. Problems related to species-selective analysis in water-insoluble fractions of solid samples and to signal identification in HPLC–ICP-MS chromatograms are highlighted. The discussion is illustrated with data recently obtained in metal speciation studies in plant and animal biochemistry.
