Abstract

Abstract The potential carcinogenicity of bitumen has been attributed to Polycyclic Aromatics Hydrocarbons (PAH) presents in its composition. Depending on the type of the asphalt and its laying temperature (between 110°C and 165°C), different quantities of various PAH compounds can be found in fumes of asphalt and can be taken up by inhalation. Moreover, depending on the viscosity of the product, PAH also can be taken up by dermal absorption. Considering the chemistry of asphalt fumes is very complex and varies according to the source of the crude oil, it is necessary to conduct a specific study about the toxicological potential from Brazilian bitumen fumes. This paper presents the first step in the research that we are carrying out to evaluate the Brazilian asphalt fumes. In this work there are two fundamental goals: the first one is to develop a device, representative of the typical working conditions, that includes to heat up the bitumen samples at different temperatures, generate fumes and catch them in a adsorbing tube (for the fumes) and in a filter (for the particulate matter), just in the same way that is used for monitoring the workers in the breathing. The second goal is to analyze the material and identify the presence and the quantity of the PAH by a liquid chromatograph (HPLC). It is known that the fumes are a mixture of thousands of organics compounds
