Abstract
The theme of this recent meeting**International Symposium on Plant Genetic Engineering, Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, Havana, Cuba, 6–10 December 1999. on plant genetic engineering was the rational use of natural resources and the protection of the environment through the application of biotechnology. The symposium featured a broad and imaginative programme of talks, designed to address political, socio-economic and regulatory issues as well as the purely scientific themes central to the application of biotechnology.
