Abstract
Simulations of SU(3) lattice gauge theory with four species of light quarks show a large peak in the bulk specific heat near ..beta.. = 6/g-italic/sup 2/roughly-equal5.10 separating strong and weak coupling. satisfies asymptotic-freedom scaling for ..beta.. = 6/g-italic/sup 2/approx. >5.10 and /sup 1/3//..lambda../sub M//sub S-bar/ = (2.6 +- 0.1)(4..pi../sup 2/..beta../25)/sup 4/25/ (MS-bar denotes the modified minimal-subtraction scheme). Finite-temperature simulations on a 6 x 10/sup 3/ lattice show a smooth but rapid crossover at T-italic/..lambda../sub M//sub S-bar/ = 2.14 +- 0.10. We find no evidence for metastable states.
