Abstract

Recent developments in supercomputers and multiprocessors have facilitated implementation of stochastic simulations to compute the movements of colloidal particles and aggregates in process equipment. This paper illustrates the possibilities and limitations of these techniques for three case studies involving simulation of particle aggregation (under Brownian, van der Waals and electrostatic forces); magnetic flocculation of fine magnetic particles (under magnetic, electrostatic and van der Waals forces); and, aggregation and deposition of particles from a dispersion flowing through a chamber (involving Brownian, hydrodynamic, electrostatic and van der Waals forces).
