Abstract

In this paper, we propose novel numerical schemes to improve the computational efficiency of the phase field model for brittle fracture. In order to reduce computation time, an adaptive update scheme is proposed. To maximize its computational efficiency, an effective adaptive mesh refinement scheme using variable-node elements is adopted. The use of the adaptive update scheme reduces computation time by 40% to 50% while maintaining the desired solution accuracy. The effectiveness of the proposed methods is demonstrated through various numerical examples.
