Abstract

A major focus of studioBASAR's work is the transformation of urban spatial infrastructure through collaboration with civic groups, NGOs and public authorities. The Bucharest firm's cofounders Alex Axinte and Cristi Borcan here describe how lack of investment under communism, followed by a capitalist flurry of private and commercial building, left Romania's citizens short of spaces for shared activities. As illustrated by several projects, they explain how they are going about addressing this issue, through establishing tools and frameworks as well as architectural design.
