Abstract
This article presents an initial assessment of the impact of the HM Treasury's 'Cross Cutting Review' (CCR) of the role of the voluntary and community sector in service provision in the UK. The analysis offered focuses in particular upon the rising agenda towards voluntary sector modernization (VSM) highlighted in this influential report and the implications that it raises for performance, management and governance arrangements within the sector. It concludes by specifying the key dimensions of such VSM and by highlighting key issues to be resolved, if this modernization agenda is to be addressed successfully by voluntary and community organizations in the UK - and elsewhere in the world.
