Abstract
ABSTRACT Wildlife tourism attractions (WTAs) are key actors in promoting ecotourism and animal welfare. This field note focuses on the Toucan Rescue Ranch (TRR), a wildlife rescue and rehabilitation nonprofit organization based in central Costa Rica, and its efforts to promote animal welfare through education and outreach. TRR's key ecotourism challenges and achievements – particularly around wildlife protections and coalition building are explored. The article concludes with reflections on the future opportunities facing ecotourism regarding animal welfare regionally, as well as the tourism industry more broadly. These findings were gleaned from discussions with TRR staff during a physical visit as well as during Zoom calls in 2023.
