Abstract

Microcapsules, filled with healing agent, not only has the ability to heal automatically the epoxy materials but also it can increase the virgin fracture toughness of epoxy. We investigated the effect of microcapsules on the fracture toughness of epoxy resins. The fracture toughness are measured using a tapered double-cantilever beam (TDCB) specimen. The fracture toughness depend strongly on the concentration of microcapsules added to the epoxy. Fracture of the neat epoxy is brittle, exhibiting a mirror fracture surface. Addition of 10 wt.% poly (urea-formaldehyde) (PUF) yields up to 58.2% increase in fracture toughness and induced a change in fracture plane morphology to hackle markings. Toughening mechanisms was study by observing the morphology of fracture plane by SEM.
