Abstract

The total neutron scattering cross section σ tot of a tetrahedral molecule in its torsional ground state is calculated from the double differential cross-sections of the individual tunneling states. Detailed predictions are made concerning the dependence of σ tot on the wavelength of the incoming neutrons and on temperature. Several experiments are suggested which may give information on tunnel splittings and on spin conversion times.
