Abstract
Abstract A simple empirical formula is given to describe the mass number dependence of total neutron cross sections at 14 MeV. It is shown that this expression can be well interpreted in terms of the nuclear Ramsauer effect with a reasonable value of the real optical potential depth and a finite surface thickness. A value of r 0 = 1.26 fm was found in agreement with the electromagnetic radii. The calculated energy dependence of the total neutron cross section for Bi agrees with the experimental values within a few percent.
