Abstract

Surgical technique and postoperative results are reported in 56 cases of total middle ear reconstruction in classical radical cavities. In 93% of the cases a normal or nearly normal anatomy of the drum and the ear canal was achieved, permitting the patient to swim. 83% reached the 30 dB level post-operatively or closed the air-bone gap to within 10 dB. The results were better in cases with remanent mobile stapes than in cases without stapes superstructure.
