Abstract

Additive manufacturing technologies can subdue the constraints of conventional manufacturing methods in the fabrication of highly complex lattice structures. Lattice structures have received particular attention in applications where material and weight reduction are significant. The research presented in this paper focuses on the weight reduction of a brake pedal utilizing lattice structures. Lattice structures are generated on the brake pedal replacing the material region followed by the topology optimization of the lattice structure for a given force acting on it. The results show that displacement and stress for the solid and optimized parts are comparable with a 21.2% reduction in mass.
