Abstract
Abstract After an introduction explaining what topological indices (TIs) are and how one may use them, a few selected TIs are described. Requirements for good TIs are outlined, and the search for TIs with low degeneracy is described. A new approach for a coding system of alkanes is sketched. The code may be converted into a TI (denoted by L) allowing, for the first time, the chemical structure to be retrieved from the TI in a restricted class of chemical graphs.
