Abstract

Today, one of the biggest social problems in the world is gender inequality. Gender, which refers to the role of women and men in a society, is shaped by society. This social concept that determines the roles of women and men leads to the gender inequality and subordinates the role of women in society. Many factors have an affect on gender roles and gender inequality. One of the most powerful of these factors is the media. It is known that media plays an important role in the formation and shaping of thoughts, behaviors and value judgments of people. Media has a power to normalize the gender inequality in society by using and reproducing sexist discourses. However, it is also one of the important social tools, which has the power to eliminate gender inequality. The aim of this study is to reveal the role of the media on gender stereotypes.
