Abstract

Dizziness and fibromyalgia The fibromyalgia syndrome is characterized by the presence of diffuse muscle pain and multiple painful points (tender points) in soft tissues, being generally accompanied by diverse symptoms unrelated to the locomotive device, among which fatigue, rigidity and disorders of sleep. Its physiopathology is not yet totally understood, and it’s believed that the primary condition in fibromyalgia would be an alteration in some central mechanism of pain control, which could result from a dysfunction in neurotransmitters. Central symptoms related to the painful presentation are non-restoring sleep and fatigue, found in the great majority of the patients. Also appear restless legs syndrome, morning fatigue, and morning pain. Paresthetic sensations habitually occur. It is important to note that paresthesia in these patients does not follow a dermatome distribution. Another common symptom is a swelling sensation, particularly in the hands, forearms and trapezes, whose cause can’t be determined through physical examination, being unrelated to any inflammatory process.
