Abstract

Tomato, being considered as a significant horticultural crop, is regarded as a model plant for the Solanaceae family and for other fruiting plant species. Accordingly, concerted efforts have been applied to developing tomato genomic resources for more than 10 years. One of the successful culminations of these efforts was the completion of the tomato genome-sequencing project. Sequencing of the whole genome was completed and the resulting high-quality assembly published in May 2012. The reference genome sequence is derived from Solanum lycopersicum cv. ‘Heinz 1706’ and serves as the basis for sequencing-based approaches to tomato genomics. The reference genome, and other upcoming genomic projects, will provide valuable data benefitting a wide variety of biological fields by accelerating the processes of identification, isolation, and functional assignment of genes of interest, by understanding evolutionary processes of Solanaceae and other plant families, and by enabling the breeding of new varieties with better agronomic traits.
