Abstract

In this paper, the author researches the earliest period of Japan’s relation- ship with Serbia based on primary sources. First, it was found that geographical informa- tion about Serbia was transmitted in Japan from the 18th to the middle of the 19th century, when the country was isolated from the international community, first through Dutch and then through Chinese. Next the author researches political discourses on Serbia in Japan during the Meiji period and discuss how the Japanese at that time viewed the East- ern Question. Finally, the author analyzes the visit of a Japanese prince to Serbia based on previously unknown documents.
