Abstract
Smoking has a negative effect on the health of the smoker, and also has a negative effect on surrounding non-smokers as environmental tobacco smoke. According to estimates by Japan's Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare in 2016, more than 15, 000 people die annually due to environmental tobacco smoke. The author looked back on research on tobacco smoke conducted over the past 40 years.
