Abstract
The objective of this paper is to analyze the role of the narratee in The Book Thief, by Markus Zusak. Using the concepts elaborated in the narratological field, especially in the voices of Gerald Prince and Grzegorz Maziarczyk, this paper shows the relevance of the narratee as it is constantly evoked throughout the story. It is realized that the speech of the narrator is totally based on his conversation to the narratee and, through this dialogue; it is possible to infer its characteristics and functions. Although the narratological studies normally focus on the narrator, it is noticed that the presence of the narratee also allows a deeper and better understanding of the literary work.
