Abstract

Ladakh is a mystical land. I feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to visit this beautiful region of India and participate in a summer internship with The Snow Leopard Conservancy Trust of India. I would like to thank Dr Tsewang Namgial and the entire team of The Snow Leopard Conservancy Trust of India (SLCTI) for their time and support, which not only enabled me to complete my internship in Ladakh, but also get an experience that I will cherish forever. SLCTI has been doing amazing work for the conservation of snow leopards and their habitat across Ladakh. They have been engaging the local community in their conservation efforts by demonstrating the importance of protecting the snow leopard and how conservation can generate local livelihoods. While working for SLCTI on their ongoing projects, I have also had the opportunity to understand how increasing tourism is impacting the socio-economic and environmental fabric of Ladakh. My research paper aims to highlight the key issues challenging Ladakh in light of the negative impact of tourism on the region’s wildlife and culture. The paper also focuses on why environmentally friendly tourism is essential and how it can positively contribute towards making Ladakh’s economy sustainable
