Abstract

Abstract The biography of objects has been explored in my recent research into three men’s wardrobes stored in the collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, and Fashion Museum, Bath. The aim has been to better understand how the materiality and biography of clothing, and the individual process of drawing together these ‘collections’ of material artefacts, can augment the life-story of these men’s lives. One of the subjects, Sir Roy Strong, will be used as a case study for this article. I set Strong’s life in context, and explore the notion of the biography of the object through a number of his garments. I explore notions of collecting, intentions (or lack of) behind purposeful acquisition of a group of objects like clothing, and the act of donating to a museum. In summary, I consider how the act of constructing the ‘life-story’ of fashion objects might influence the curatorial interpretations of these collections.
