Abstract

The concept of marriage evokes thoughts of security love and home, and as a social institution, marriage has become a tradition. Embedded within this tradition is the myth that all married couples are (or should be) heterosexual. This paper examines the relatively new concept of same-sex marriage by providing a historical analysis of the concepts of marriage and family, current definitions associated with these concepts, and legislative and justice responses to the idea of lesbian and gay marriage. A case for the legalization of lesbian and gay marriage is included.
