Abstract

Abstract A dating project was carried out aimed at optimizing the standard TL procedure for pottery samples from Carnuntum, Austria. More than 70 samples of different types of pottery were analysed using the fine-grain technique. The environmental dose-rate at the excavation site was measured by different methods and a test programme with archaeologically well-dated samples was used to find the best procedure for dating. Bricks from a bath, a lime-kiln and pieces of pottery from the fill of a post hole were dated to an accuracy ranging from ±3 to ±14%.
