Abstract

ABSTRACT Integrating personality factors within exercise psychology offers new and promising avenues to understand physical activity/exercise across the lifespan. This scientometric review aimed to comprehensively summarise the knowledge base and historical developments of research on personality and physical activity/exercise over the past 25 years, identifying active research areas and emerging trends. We analysed a corpus of 889 publications on personality and physical activity/exercise from 1999 to 2023, along with their 35,753 references, sourced from Web of Science Core Collection. Document co-citation analysis and keyword co-occurrence analysis were subsequently conducted. The results produced systematic mapping of research trends over time, highlighting significant research themes. Our findings reveal a growing interest in theoretical integration (especially social cognitive theories), mechanisms of impact, and health benefits. To better leverage personality differences for understanding physical activity and ultimately help individuals maintain a physically active lifestyle, more integrative research is needed. Accordingly, we provided recommendations for future research directions.
