Abstract

Time is an essential element of human activities in organizations. Almost all aspects of organizational life take place in a temporal context and are subject to the influence of various time-related factors (e.g., timing, speed, time limits, time intervals, changes over time). However, our understanding of the implications that time may have for organizational behavior phenomena is still rather limited. Thus, this symposium aims to move forward our exploration of the subject of time by featuring theoretical and empirical research that uses a number of different ways to highlight the role of time in organizational behavior dynamics. Specifically, papers in this symposium (1) develop time-related constructs and theories relevant to organizational settings, and/or (2) adopt dynamic methodological approaches that provide interesting new perspectives for organizational questions, and/or (3) examine time-sensitive organizational contexts where the critical role of time naturally surfaces, thereby demonstrating three different approaches to advancing our understanding of the role of time in management and organizational phenomena. In addition to sharing a common emphasis on time and dynamism, papers in this symposium utilize a diverse set of method designs and span across a range of topical domains, thus providing an extended conceptual and methodological portfolio to stimulate a scholarly conversation on how time plays a role in various individual and collective processes in organizations.
