Abstract

Popular theatre is a term much in vogue around the world today. Used to describe that theatre which is created for audiences usually ignored by the established middle-class theatres, the term embraces not only theatre for the people, but political theatre as well. In Canada, where commercial success is increasingly applied as a criterion of critical success, the decidedly non-commercial popular theatres have been largely ignored, and when they have been noticed (that is, when they can afford to tour to Toronto), they have had difficulty in winning acceptance as a serious and significant movement.
