Abstract

This paper deals with through transmission characteristics of Ao Lamb mode, which is incident at the tip of a through thickness crack in an isotropic medium. Experiments were conducted transducing Ao Lamb mode at 200kHz frequency in one mm thick aluminium plate. Experimental A-scans captured in time domain, at various configurations, were transformed to frequency domain and variation in normalized amplitude of Ao mode in time and frequency domains with respect to configuration of probe unit, expressed in degree, was evaluated. It was observed that when transmitter and receiver are aligned with the axis of the crack, amplitude of transmitted Ao mode is large. Low amplitude Ao mode was transmitted when the axis of the crack is perpendicular to direction of propagation of Ao mode.
