Abstract

This paper studies the performance of the frequency maximum likelihood (ML) estimator of a single tone in Gaussian noise. Two mean-square error (MSE) approximations are first applied and then compared in the case of a known phase offset. The first is proposed by Van Trees and corresponds to the method of interval errors (MIE). The second MSE approximation is proposed by Rife and Boorstyn in . The problem is formulated in the data-aided frequency synchronization frame.
