Abstract
Summary Formation hardness and compressive strength correlate with calculated shear travel time, which has led to the development of a correlation between economical roller-cone bit selection and calculated shear travel time. Upper and lower shear-travel-time limits are then placed on steel-tooth and tungsten-carbide bits as a guide to help minimize the cost per foot when a well is preplanned.
