Abstract

ABSTRACT This paper presents a new coiled tubing unit (CTU) thixotropic squeeze cementing technique developed by BP Exploration (Alaska) Inc. for use in remedial cementing operations on water injection wells and other wells with low fracture gradients. Results of application of this technique are also presented. Preliminary attempts at squeeze cementing seawater injection wells with conventional CTU cement slurries have required multiple attempts and very large volumes of cement. In some cases these conventional CTU squeezes have been relatively unsuccessful. This thixotropic squeeze cementing technique has been utilized to successfully squeeze seawater injection wells. This is believed to be the first time a cement system designed with thixotropic properties has been successfully used as part of a coiled tubing workover technique.
