Abstract
ABSTRACT Focusing on queer female fan labor within the K-pop realm, this study explores how fans engage with female-centered media texts and the role of fan labor in shaping collective queer female identity. By examining the phenomenon of “girl crush” groups, particularly Mamamoo, and how fan-created content surrounding their queerness functions, I reveal how affect-based queer networks emerge through free fan labor, complicating fans’ relationships with identity and constructing online spaces for queer female fans. This article thus emphasizes the transcultural nature of these interpretations and the significance of fan labor in fostering subversive, community-focused engagement within “girl crush” groups.
