Abstract

Although it may appear unchanging, in fact every coronation ceremony is a fresh service, which is a product of its time. But political and social changes—for example, reform of the House of Lords and the increasing religious and social complexity of modern British society—will also have an impact. This article introduces the coronation ritual, in particular describing the coronation of Her Majesty The Queen. The religious legitimacy of the monarch remains important. The theory of divine right may have weakened, but only in favour of divine duty.
