Abstract
ABSTRACT This essay explores Proust's use of Vinteuil as a way to consider the relationship between artistic genius and perceived eccentricity. Vinteuil is presented both a ‘foolish old man’ and a composer of genius, thus staging a tension between the contingent and absolute nature of art. Proust's metaphorical use of music becomes a model for the creative process, where the ‘confused music’ of inspiration must be translated into coherent expression. Yet, Proust's treatment of Vinteuil and his musical analogies point to the mysteries and disturbances inherent in art.
