Abstract

This chapter analyzes the history and effects of third-party actors in global military affairs. It begins with an observation of transnational and international organizations that have collected, produced and published comparative data on a variety of aspects of world politics. It also discusses the creation of a complex global system of ongoing quantified observation and evaluation of patterns, trends and problems in world politics and other parts of world society. The chapter explains the scope and impact of third-party actors on global military affairs and clarifies how it changed the underlying dynamics of military competition. It refers to the group of third-party actors that includes the United Nations, the International Institute for Strategic Studies, and the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute.
