Abstract

Burn is a coagulative necrosis of skin and variable amount of deeper tissues produced by thermal energy. Studies have shown that severe burn affects male fertility, female burn survivor are not immune to post burn effects, they are also affected. To examine the effects of third degree burns (TDB) on estrous cycle and the ovarian histology in Wister rats. A total of fifteen adult female albino rats weighing between 150-200 g were used in the experiments. They were divided into three groups (n=5 rats/group) designated control, sham, and experimental groups. Third degree burn injuries equivalent to 30% of their total body surface area (TBSA) were inflicted on the skins of the experimental rats. The sham group had 30% of the TBSA shaved and warm water at room temperature applied without causing any injury. The control rats were normal usual rats. The estrous cycles of rats were monitored. The rats were sacrificed and ovaries processed for histology. Experimental group a prolonged phase of diestrous in their cycling pattern. Delayed ovarian maturation and causes rapid degeneration of ovarian follicles. TDB causes alteration in estrous cycle and ovarian morphology of rats. Key words: Wister rats, burns, ovarian follicles
