Abstract

Total, soluble and protein bound thiol values of the livers and kidneys and the soluble blood thiol values were determined using 10 strains of chickens selected for resistance or susceptibility to lymphoid leukosis and/or Marek’s disease. Liver total thiol, and liver soluble thiol were higher (P<0.01 and P<0.05, respectively) in strains of chickens classified as resistant to Marek’s disease than strains classified as susceptible. The soluble blood thiol was lower (P<0.01) in strains of chickens classified as resistant to lymphoid leukosis than in strains classified as susceptible. Individual strains of chickens varied in all thiol values.
