Abstract

This work covers the mechanical behavior of Alclad AA2024-T3 aluminum alloy subjected to strain rates ranging from 10−3 s−1 to 1150 s−1 and temperatures from 24 °C up to 250 °C for dynamic and up to 350 °C for quasi-static experiments. Dynamic tension tests were conducted using split Hopkinson tension bar (SHTB) apparatus. In-situ strain mapping using Digital Image Correlation (DIC) technique has been utilized for the entire experimental work except for the high rate high temperature experiments, where the test specimens were enclosed in the designed heating chamber. The findings revealed a degree of negative strain rate sensitivity (NSRS) on the material. IR thermography during dynamic tests shows a notable adiabatic temperature rise which influences the plastic flow behavior of Alclad AA2024-T3 aluminum alloy and the constitutive response of the material, resulting in a noticeable NSRS effect.
