Abstract

The effects of Dy co-doping on the thermoluminescence (TL) characteristics of LiNaSO4:Eu phosphor are studied. Energy transfer from Eu2+ to Dy3+ results in a decrease in TL peak intensity suggesting that Dy3+ plays a negative role in TL emission in the present matrix. However, though Dy3+ acts as a quencher, it helps in understanding the TL phenomena in a better way. Change in the order of kinetics (from 1 to 2) also suggests the appearance of strong retrapping of charges during TL emission due to co-doping. The phosphor LiNaSO4 :Eu,Dy has a simple TL glow curve structure with a single prominent peak around 425 K. The photoluminescence (PL) emission spectra have three peaks (440, 475 and 570 nm) which could be attributed to the Eu2+ and Dy3+ emissions. Fading and reusability of LiNaSO4 :Eu,Dy are also studied and it is found that the phosphor is quite suitable for use in dosimetry of ionizing radiations. (© 2003 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co.
