Abstract

An efficient way to enhance the thermoelectric figure of merit ZT of materials by reducing lattice thermal conductivity is to embed suitable nano scale precipitates in bulk materials that scatter the longer wavelength heat-carrying phonons but not electrons/holes. On page 1117, Mercouri G. Kanatzidis and co-workers demonstrate that endotaxial nanocrystals of the MgTe form spontaneously in bulk PbTe and scatter heat-carrying phonons, but with little effect on hole carrier scattering. The ZT value of 1.6 obtained in the PbTe–2 mol% MgTe doped with 2 mol% Na2Te at 780 K is among the highest achieved in PbTe systems.
