Abstract

This article develops a unipolar thermoelastic constitutive relation for twisted cord-reinforced elastomeric composites. Depending on the cord twist about the axial direction, the associated torsional moment and extensional forces may be strongly coupled. Such coupling leads to simultaneous extensional and torsional thermal expansion. The generality of the scheme of formulation is such that large deformation / strain situations can be handled. This is achieved through the use of second Piola Kirchhoff stress and moment stress tensors and their associated kinematic measures. Note that such pairings are cord, i.e., particle following. In this context the provide for a consistent ongoing update of local and global configurational orientations.
