Abstract

This note invokes thermodynamic perturbation theory to provide explicit expressions for the changes in free energy and entropy as a result of small variations in the structure of complex molecular systems. We use these perturbation methods to establish, under certain kinds of variations, correlations between the changes in free energy and the changes in entropy. The analytic results described in this note are intended to complement the procedures being implemented in J. Mol. Biol. 224, 771 (1992) to experimentally assess the effect of mutations on the stability of certain proteins.
