Abstract

The authors consider the kinetic patterns of the thermo-oxidative and thermal degradation of PVC in the solid phase and in a medium of complex esters in presence of a natural compound of the phenol type 2,2′-di-1,6,7-trihydroxy-3-methyl-5-isoprophyl-8-aldehydonaphthyl (gossypol). It has been established that gossypol effectively inhibits the thermo-oxidative dehydrochlorination of PVC in the liquid and solid phases. The stabilizing activity of gossypol is due both to the prevention of the oxidative degradation of PVC and the complex ester solvents of the polymer, the natural dinaphthyl compound having in this respect a number of specific advantages over the widely used synthetic anti-oxidants of the phenol type.
