Abstract
Thermocurrent studies have been made of PTFE and FEP polymers as prepared for radiation dosimetry applications. Samples are processed under controlled annealing conditions. Three cooling rates are employed: (a) 16 degrees C h-1, (b) 180 degrees C h-1 and (c) quenched, to produce samples of known morphology and sensitivities: (a) 250 pC rad1 cm-2, (b) 170 pC rad-1 cm-2 and (c) 140 pC rad-1 cm-2. Unannealed samples have a sensitivity of 75 pC rad-1 cm-2. Results show that initial small doses of radiation cause a 100% change in the magnitude of the TC spectra and a 30-40 degrees C shift in the peak temperature. The authors postulate annihilation of low-energy traps and suggest a correlation between carrier path length and morphological size. A spurious signal equivalent to 15 mrad accumulates during storage. Dose response curves indicate the usefulness of PTFE and FEP for dosimetry.
